Holden Repco Sports
Chassis # R4-0001

1959 Holden Repco Sports

The space frame chassis for the Repco Sports was originally built By David Van Dal in 1954 for Jim Richard's BRM Morgan R4 monoposto racing car.

In its original form it competed in the Australian Grand Prix and held the Lap record at Caversham in its class and had a top speed of 143 mph.

In 1959 Jack Ayres acquired the vehicle and commissioned Cliff Byfield to sculpture an aluminum sports body capable of accommodating a Repco high performance motor. The vehicle was successfully campaigned in 1959 and won the WA Sporting Car Championship.

The Repco sports is currently being driven by John Davies

In 1960 it was sold to Lionel Beattie. Lionel successfully raced the car over the next few years winning the Sporting Car Championships in 1961 and 1962 and together with Jack Ayres won the 6 Hour Le Mans in 1962.

Around the House races were major events and during 1962 won at Albany beating Doug Green in a Ferrari 625.

In 1963 it was sold to Rod Waller and competed successfully right up to the late 1960's.

By 1970 the vehicle was obsolete and was scraped.

The vehicle was acquired in poor condition in 1974 by Neil McCrudden.

The vehicle was rebuilt during the mid 1990's and has run at a number of events including around the houses' hill climbs and at Wanneroo Raceway.

Following the restoration in the late 1990's until 2004 the car was campaigned at "Around the Houses" events and regularities by Rod Waller, the owner of the car from 1963 to 1969. For two years the car lay idle and in 2006 John Davies volunteered to take on the stewardship of this unique car. John is an experienced race driver who has campaigned his Austin Healey 100 at historic race events around Australia. John is keen to ensure the car once again became competitive and has significantly helped in the restoration of the car. It is hoped John will run the car for several years both in Australia and overseas.
