The John Coombs team also ran a semi works car that year for Piers Courage. His Chassis M4A/2, was driven to 5th place at the Nurburgring, 3rd at Hockenheim and 5th at Crystal Palace. At Brands Hatch, Piers crashed heavily and the car was written off. It was obtained by Howden Ganley who was a McLaren employee as well as a racing driver. He completely rebuilt the car, changing some parts and re-numbering the chassis M4C/2. The car was then sold to Jan Bussell in 1970 who took the car to Malaysia, and raced the car in a series which included the Malaysian Grand Prix. He one the G.P. that year. The chassis was found much later by a serving air force engineer stationed in Malaysia in the roof of a garage. He shipped the car back to England, and later sold it off to the present owner. The M4A was restored to it's original works specification, and as press released by the late Bruce McLaren. The engine is the Cosworth FVA 1600cc, F2 specification and like the car is in full working condition. The car had been previously on display for the last twelve years at Donington & Midland Motor Museums and now resides in Perth at the Fremantle Motor Museum. |
