Alton AR2 Formula GP

1965 Alton AR2

Built in 1965 by Tony Caldersmith
The Alton AR2 is an Australian built Formula GP race car using a 6 cylinder grey Holden motor, triple SU carburettors and Hollinger modified VW gearbox/transaxle.
It is a cross between a Lotus 20 and early Brabhams.
In the same year (1965), FIA changed F1 rules on the engine size from 2.5 ltrs to 1.5 ltrs making the Alton ineligible.
The Alton was then raced along the east coast in many hill climbs with various degrees of success.
After a crash in 1970 it was sold off and changed hands until 1984 when the rebuilding began by a number of owners till 1994 when it was on the track again as a group M historic race car.
In 2003 a full restoration was done returning it to 1965 livery. It had continued to be raced till being brought to WA in 2006 and hopefully still will in the future.

This car was purchased in April 2006 from Brian Simpson of Victoria
and is now owned & driven by Henry Oosterbaan of Perth
