The 60-lap, 120-mile (195 km) final started at 3.30 pm, November 18, 1962, in hot sunshine. Bruce McLaren rocketed away in his 2.7-1itre car, with former team-mate, Jack Brabham, hot on his heels. A horde of Coopers followed close behind. Lex Davison abruptly pitted when his steering wheel came off in his hands, borrowed one from Bill Patterson's spare car in the pits, and leapt back into the fray. McLaren built up a 7-second lead, but at lap 40 he spun at Craven A Corner and by the time he regained the track his lead was cut to one second.

Brabham now started pushing McLaren hard, setting a new lap record of 1 min 20 sec in the process. Stillwell, back in third position, had his engine go sour and Youl got past. Then drama struck. Brabham was lapping Arnold Glass in the hybrid BRM-Buick when the two cars collided at KLG Corner. Brabham's car was wrecked and McLaren had a clear run home. Youl was second, and Stillwell an ailing third, when the chequered flag fell.
